Researcher hits back at Meta and says that platforms have secret courts

Folha de S. Paulo - January 7, 2025

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's criticism of "secret decisions" by courts in Latin America is part of a rhetorical game, because the platforms are the ones who have secret courts, says Marie Santini, director of NetLab, a disinformation research laboratory at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro).

"At no point does he talk about transparency. And every year Meta reduces transparency and the possibility for researchers to observe what happens within the platform," she says.

The researcher believes that if the goal were to combat censorship, the platform should increase transparency so that it would be possible to know how, when and where moderation, removal and curation of content — paid or not — takes place. "But his statement goes in the opposite direction," she says.
